New Years Eve (and a sketch!)

December 31, 2009

Today looks like it’s mostly going to consist of getting ready for New Year’s, so I did a quick sketch this morning right after getting up. I want to increase my comfort with doing backgrounds, so here’s a quick landscape sketch!

Everyone have a great New Year’s Eve and please come visit my site again next year!

Quick, rough portrait. I’m trying to get faster at these. This one was maybe 30 minutes worth of sketching and rendering.darrell_port

Mission: Portrait (Complete)

December 22, 2009

I finished up the portrait of my munchkin this morning and thought I’d share. I love how it came out. I also did some sketches a day or so ago that I didn’t get around to posting here then, so here they are now!

This was just a quickie sketch for a ConceptArt.org daily sketch group topic (Mid-sized manned submarine touching down on the icy crust of Europa).

Happiest Baby Ever!

December 18, 2009

I got some extra time this evening to sit down and paint a bit. The little one was being particularly happy just sitting and playing, so in honor of that joyous event I thought I’d do a portrait of her.

My husband got Space Hulk for his birthday this year, but between work, family and a last minute move across the state, we just hadn’t found time to play it. The cure? Spend a quiet evening at home with a friend we literally haven’t seen in years and break the game out.

How does this tie in with art in any way whatsoever? Simply put,  I failed to read the instructions for the game prior to said friend’s arrival and was not aware that Space Hulk is a two player game. The result was plenty of time to sit and sketch while the guys played!

This one is kind of rough. Most things drawn away from my computer are done without reference.

Let the blogging begin!

December 17, 2009

I’ve developed a bad habit of infrequent website updates due to the time it takes to edit the code and log into my FTP client just to post a sketch or announcement. My salvation has arrived in the form of Wordpress! I have a good feeling about this method!

I have a couple of poorly maintained sketchbook threads on the forums of related sites that I’m hoping to consolidate into this forum as well. My (very flexible) plan is to post sketches, works in progress, information about other projects I’m working on, and news all in one place. There will probably be a baby picture or craft project tossed in now and then as well.

To get this thing rolling, here’s a peek at what I’m messing with right now. I did a quick sketch for a challenge a while back, but never did anything else with it. After stumbling onto it again, I decided I loved the poses and was going to finish it. Here’s where it’s at right now:
